Don’t Forget Mother’s Day

It seems that barely a week goes by until the next celebratory day is upon us. My Facebook timeline was full of St Patrick’s Day posts and photographs earlier this month, even though I’m not Irish and most of the people making the posts weren’t either. There’s always been celebratory days, notable events most people acknowledged like Halloween and Valentine’s Day as well as the biggies like Christmas and Easter, but there seem to be so many more now. Almost without exception these ‘special days’ are worthy and being used to highlight something important. Today there’s a Breast Cancer Awareness event going on and once again social media is full of images and chatter. Indeed charities seem to be at the forefront of this trend so I’m carefully highlighting that I’m not criticising them just pointing out that at times it can be hard to keep up with them. Of course there’s no compulsion to join in with them, sure sometimes peer pressure might be applied but they are all voluntary and can be ignored if you want. However in my opinion one of these special days that really shouldn’t be ignored is nearly upon us. Mother’s Day has been around for a long time now and there’s a good reason for that. It’s not a fad, it isn’t trendy and it won’t disappear in a year or two because of a lack of funding. Recognising the role mothers play in both our own lives and in wider society is something almost everyone can relate too. Being a mother is a full-time role with terrible hours and poor pay. They are usually under appreciated, don’t always get positive feedback and by the time you are old enough to really appreciate all they did for you chances are you’re a parent yourself. So make sure in the plethora of good causes, notable events and social highlights that make up our lives today you don’t forget Mother’s Day, some days are simply more important than others.
