Mackintosh's Life
Charles Rennie Mackintosh (7 June 1868 – 10 December 1928) was a Scottish architect, furniture designer and artist. Born in Glasgow, his work is still a major feature throughout the city and examples can be seen all over Scotland.
His distinct style, often featuring long drawn out plant forms, geometric flowers and squares or grids, is easily to spot and admired the world over.
Mackintosh is one of four designers, considered to be at the core of “The Glasgow Style”. The Glasgow Style is a popular term given to the design and decorative arts centred around the work by teachers, students and graduates of The Glasgow School of Art produced between about 1890 and 1920. Glasgow was the birthplace of the only Art Nouveau ‘movement’ in the UK and its style made ripples internationally.
Mackintosh's Work
Mackintosh’s major commissions, alongside partners, included designs for private homes, commercial buildings, interior renovations and churches. Perhaps his most notable works include The Glasgow School of Art, Hill House, House For An Art Lover, The Willow Tea Rooms and Scotland Street School.
Celebrating Mackintosh
In 2018 we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Mackintosh’s birth. To mark the occasion, Glasgow Life are hosting an exhibition at The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum that will span the lifetime of Mackintosh entitled Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Making the Glasgow Style, running until 14th August 2018.
We were delighted when Glasgow Life also approached Shearer Candles to make a special range of Mackintosh inspired candles.
This range of beautiful scented candles carries the delicate and romantic scent of rose petals with sandalwood. The candles are encased in a striking Mackintosh inspired design, displaying his signature Red Rose motif. The fragrance is available in a small tin candle, large tin candle and glass jar candle.
